The origin of cold noodles originated in Pyongyang during the mid-Goryeo period.
According to a 1973 cookbook published in North Korea,
Pyongyang naengmyeon is said to have been first served in Uiam-dong,
the Daedong River district of Pyongyang,
and it was the beginning of the buckwheat sujebi dough being extracted into noodles.
